Entire length of Gypsy Lane

Reported via iOS in the Road Surface category anonymously at 12:21, Monday 27 January 2025

Sent to Central Bedfordshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 417685.

Pot holes developing along the entire length of the road both sides at edges from Hill Lane to Southill Road. With the road closure in Biggleswade, Gypsy Lane is again being used as a “rat run” and the additional traffic, sometimes vehicles beyond the weight limit are using this route (I have twice met the Grant Palmer bus to Biggleswade and have had to stop and pull right over so it can pass!!!). This road does not have the capacity for the amount of use being caused by the road closure in Biggleswade, it is a nightmare to navigate at the best of times. The edges of the road are breaking up and numerous potholes are developing along the length, vehicles are also now churning up the verges to pass. Additionally, there are no white lines as demarcation so many vehicles who feel they have to achieve the ridiculous 60mph speed limit are often heading along the centre of the road to avoid potholes and because they have no idea about the width of the road are often heading in the path on oncoming traffic.

  • Thank you for contacting us with information relating to a Highways issue. Requests for speed limit changes/traffic calming will be reviewed and prioritised accordingly against all other requests across the county. We do not alter speed limits based on the perception of an issue. Requests will be reviewed based on a number of factors including collision history and independent traffic volume and speed counts over a 7 day, 24 hour period, along with meeting suitability with DfT guidance and prioritised accordingly. Should the request meet all the criteria it may be added to the Capital Works Programme for future years.
